When played open it sounds really dull / dead but when fretted it … WebI just started learning how to play a little while ago and I've run into a problem. I started having a problem with the high E string on my acoustic guitar. After tuning it back to standard tuning from drop D it seems frets 5-10 produce this muted, dampened sound that doesn't ring through the body but playing the rest of the frets are fine.

When I bend the 15th fret up a whole step, the note goes dead.

Since you are on the E string, maybe the end of the 13th fret has lifted a bit so check to see if you can slip the edge of a razor blade under that fret. If you can, get a luthier to superglue the fret end back down. I would try a new string anyway as it could be a bad string but I suspect a fret problem.
